A message from Keith Bartley, GTCE Chief Executive
On behalf of the General Teaching Council for England, I am inviting you to join a debate about the future of teaching and the role that your professional body can play in supporting its development. We know from independent research that the public holds teachers in high regard, but that schools and teachers feel that they need more space and freedom to be creative, to find solutions that work for their own pupils and to support pupil achievement in the round.
I believe that being a registered, qualified teacher is an important assurance to the public and parents about the high quality of the teacher workforce. I would like teachers themselves to attach more meaning and value to registration, which should be an expression of our commitment to continuing professional development and a signal that we share important ethical and professional values in common.
We have just concluded the election for 25 teacher members of Council and our partner organisations are confirming who their nominees will be for the Council which will serve from September 2008 to August 2012.
The draft vision is one that has been drawn up for discussion with:
- teachers
- our stakeholders and partner organisations
- representatives of parents, governors and the wider public.
The Council has set itself the aim of developing a four year programme of work which will support our vision for teaching in 2012. Based on your responses, the key priorities and objectives will be agreed in September and will then be published as part of the GTCE’s Corporate Plan for 2008 -12.
Please help us shape the consultation and debate by giving us your first thoughts on our working draft.
