Gloria Hyatt

Education Consultant/Advisor

Gloria was appointed to the Council by the public appointment process in September 2005. She sits on the GTC’s Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Gloria Hyatt graduated from John Moores University in 1993, gaining a B.Ed (Hons) and taught in a number of Secondary schools in Liverpool as a teacher of English and physical education. In 1993 she joined Elimu Academy, setting up the country’s first black-led independent school to cater for secondary pupils who were talented and gifted or excluded from school. She also became Liverpool’s first headteacher with an African heritage. Gloria with her team, set up extended services for the Toxeth community, that comprised a classroom assistant and mentors course, after school service and a service for young offenders or those at risk of offending. These services formed part of an array of multi-agencies with a range of professionals. The school in 2003 was highly commended by HMI for the excellent provision of services and partnerships.

In 2002 she gained a Master of Education degree from Liverpool University, specialising in inclusive education and education management. In 2003 she was awarded an MBE for services to Education, became Merseyside Women of the Year, and gained the Executive Professions Network award for services to education.

She sat on a number of boards as an advisor for Dingle Granby Toxeth Education Action Zone, the Liverpool LEA, Social Inclusion Team, the John Moores University and a number of charitable groups who delivered services for children and young people. In 2002 she became an education consultant for Office of Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and undertook work for local authorities and strategic partnerships. Following the success of the independent school it was decided that its pupils would benefit from LEA provision and the service was mainstreamed in April 2004. The remaining services transferred into a new organisation, Novas Group, during which time Gloria assisted Novas in setting up as community education provider.

In 2005, Gloria moved on to set up her own company, Teach Consultancy Ltd. She continues to work as an advisor for Local Government and Communities (formerly ODPM). She owns an online graduate recruitment agency and offers the public, private and third sectors, training and consultancy. She owns an international business offering coaching and financial advice.
