Kirit Modi

Assistant Director (Education Strategy and Management Support) – CEA@Islington

Kirit Modi was appointed to the Council by the public appointment process in September 2005. He sits on the Executive Committee.

Kirit has been working in education for over 30 years and is now an Education Adviser. Until March 2008 he was the Assistant Director of Education in Islington. He started as a mathematics teacher, worked in two secondary schools in Leicestershire and Bedfordshire for ten years, and was Head of Department at both schools.

He then moved to Bedfordshire LEA, initially as the Co-ordinator for Multicultural Education and then as a Senior Education Officer responsible for Strategic Planning and Policy. In 1997 he became Assistant Director of Education in Luton, where he helped set up a new unitary authority. In Islington, he helped turn around a failing LEA. Since then, he has led Islington’s BSF and the Primary Capital programmes by developing an approach of transforming education through investment.

He is currently supporting Central Bedfordshire in establishing a new unitary authority from April 2009 and working with CfBT in supporting local authorities and schools in managing change through the BSF programme. He is a Governor of Canons High School in Harrow and Associate Governor of Krishna - Avanti Primary School, the first Hindu VA School in the country. He is a Committee member of the Lister Kidney Foundation.

Kirit’s main interests are transforming education, managing change and tackling underachievement. He has a passion for developing strategies for making equality a reality in children’s services.
