Four principles

A professional voice on teaching

We advise government on issues affecting the profession, based on research evidence and teachers’ experience and expertise. We want teachers to identify effective practice on the ground. In this way teachers’ professional knowledge and concerns can influence education policy and the GTC can promote solutions that teachers believe can work.

Supporting and upholding existing high standards

Teaching is characterised by high professional standards. Our regulatory work upholds the very high standards that the profession expects of itself. The GTC’s Register is a unique source of evidence about the profession on matters such as retention and recruitment.

Promoting public confidence in teaching

Teachers have a profound influence on the life chances of their pupils. Every other occupation relies on the skills, expertise and enthusiasm of teachers.

Listening to and working with teachers

Two thirds of our Council members are practising teachers, in touch with the realities of classroom practice. We work with teachers in local projects, invite teachers to meetings and seminars and conduct annual representative surveys of the profession. This ensures that the views and expertise of teachers inform and shape our work.
