The 64 Council Members play a crucial role in developing and supporting effective relationships within the education community and beyond.
The General Teaching Council is a unique partnership of teachers and others with an interest in the education service, including parents, governors and employers. The GTC has been created to work in the public interest and we therefore work closely with the organisations represented on our Council and with outside agencies and organisations.
The Council is made up of:
Most Council Members (around two thirds) are practising teachers, but overall Council’s composition reflects the diversity of the education landscape. It includes school governors, parents, those involved in further and higher education, and representatives from teacher unions and associations, local government and equality bodies.
Elections and nominations of teachers to Council are made on a four-year cycle. The last elections were held in 2004 and the next election will be in 2008. The Chair and Vice Chair of Council are elected by the Council for a two year period of office. The full Council meets four times a year at various venues in England. Council Members meet teachers on a local basis, often at events held the day before council. Committees and other working groups of Members work throughout the year to develop GTC policy, carry out the regulatory role, advocate for the Council, and govern the organisation.
