Conduct and competence
published:31 Mar 2009
Cases of misconduct and incompetence are addressed by several agencies, including the GTC.
Misconduct cases that relate to the safety of children and young people under 19 should be referred to the Independent Safeguarding Authority. Other conduct cases are dealt with by the GTC. Cases of alleged incompetence are always dealt with by the GTC.
Cases to be referred to the GTC include those where the teacher:
- is dismissed for a reason relating to misconduct or incompetence
- resigns in circumstances where dismissal was a possibility.
These requirements cover all registered teachers, including supply teachers and those working on temporary contracts.
Each case is dealt with according to the GTC’s disciplinary process.
Details of forthcoming hearings and summaries of all decisions taken within the last three months can be viewed on this website.
The latest edition of the Record of Decisions, a searchable document giving details of all current and past decisions of the GTC’s disciplinary committees, is available via Employer Access.
