Data protection and employers

last updated:01 Apr 2009

Employers have limited access to information about teachers. Employers need to know if a teacher is qualified, where they qualified, the subjects they studied and whether a teacher has passed induction. They also need to know about any restrictions in force against a teacher.

The only information the public can be given is whether or not a teacher is registered.

Secure data exchange with the GTC
Each year the GTC exchanges data with employers. These exchanges are very important. They help identify teachers who appear not to hold qualified teacher status or who are not registered with the GTC. They also help to maintain the accuracy of the Register of teachers and to facilitate an efficient process for fee collection.

The GTC is keen to work with employers to make sure these transfers of personal data about teachers are secure. It has been working with employers to identify named contacts who deal with data exchange and IT issues.

To confirm or update your IT contact details, phone the GTC on 0121 345 0098 or email systems.team@gtce.org.uk
