About the Council

last updated:21 Jun 2011

The GTC's 64 council members form a unique partnership. They develop and support relationships within and beyond the education community. The council is made up of:

  • 25 members who are elected by registered teachers
  • 9 members chosen by teacher trade unions and associations
  • 17 members chosen by other organisations connected with teaching; and
  • 13 members chosen through the public appointments procedure, which the Government uses to appoint people to a wide range of public organisations.

While around two-thirds of council members are registered teachers, the Council also includes:

  • school governors and parents
  • those involved in further education and higher education
  • representatives of equal opportunities organisations; and
  • representatives of local government.

There are also a number of panelists appointed to supplement the pool of people who sit on the Council’s regulatory committees.

The most recent Council election took place in 2008. The 25 elected members will serve until the proposed closure of the organisation on 31 March 2012. The Chair and Vice Chair were last elected in 2009 and will remain in post until the closure of the GTC.

Those 13 members appointed by the Secretary of State (Public Appointees) began their term of office on 1 September 2009. All those members will retain their posts until the closure of the organisation.

Full council meets up to three times a year. Meetings are now mainly held in London and Birmingham. The Council's decisions are published on this website.
