Members' expenses

last updated:14 Jul 2010

The Council’s Member Expenses scheme gives clear guidance on the arrangements for claiming and paying Members’ expenses and is reviewed periodically by full Council.

The daily supply cover or attendance allowance is only provided for the times when members are actually travelling to and from, and participating in ‘approved Council duties’.  Supply cover/attendance allowance is not paid for reading time, with the exception of reserve investigating committee panelists for a trial period of 12 weeks that began in December 2010.

The approved duties since the 2 June announcement can be summarised as:

  • meetings of the Council and any Committees on which the member serves.
  • required attendance at regulatory hearings and investigating committee meetings
  • attendance at a meeting of another body to which the member has been  nominated to represent the Council
  • any other duties as approved by the Council Secretary  in advance following consultation with the Chief Executive/ Director in consultation with the Chair where appropriate.

The entitlement to reimbursement for the absence of an employee on Council business is extended to the employers of all members, whether within the teaching profession or not, including Members with their own businesses (self-employed).

Retired and supply teacher (or other equivalent) members not paid by an employer on that day are entitled to receive a personal attendance allowance at the same rate, paid net of income tax.
