Role of Members
last updated:06 Jan 2011
Council members have, during their term of office:
- helped to promote high standards of teaching by taking part in the development of GTC policy at Council and Committee meetings
- upheld professional standards by taking part in the investigation or hearing of regulatory cases
- acted as advocates for teachers, teaching and the GTC through the Council’s networks, conferences and events.
- taken responsibility for ensuring that the GTC runs itself effectively and makes good use of teachers’ registration fees.
The balance of activity has been flexible and has varied depending on members’ interests and expertise.
Now, as the GTC moves to closure the role of full Council is to oversee the closure and transition process, with full decision making powers delegated to the Council's Executive Committee.
In late November 2011, changes to the disciplinary rules relating to the regulatory function, made in the light of a recent Court of Appeal hearing, meant that Council Members could no longer participate in this area of the Council's work. Instead, this work is undertaken by additional Committee Members. Council Members do however continue to sit on investigating Committee panels and on Induction Appeals.
