Speaking up for professionalism

The General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) has published a statement expressing regret at Michael Gove’s proposal to abolish the General Teaching Council for England.

The statement follows a GTCW council meeting earlier in July when concerns were raised over the prospect of teachers in England becoming the only professionals in the UK without a representative professional body.

The GTCW statement also mentions the respect parents and the wider public have for the teaching profession, and the reassurance they feel knowing that teachers are part of a regulated profession.
