The General Teaching Council for England met on Tuesday 6 July 2010 at Bridgewater Hall, Lower Molsley Street, Manchester, M2 3WS.

The Council considered and accepted the Annual Report and Financial Statements in Private Session.  

The Council then moved in to public session and received the minutes of the meeting of 26 January 2010 and the special meeting of 24 March 2010 and noted the standard decision tracking paper setting out progress in actioning previous decisions. 

Council received a schedule of the Chair’s and Vice Chair’s business since the last Council meeting and a verbal report by the Chief Executive, Keith Bartley.

Council agreed the recommendations set out within the Summary of work of Committees

Council received and noted a report entitled ‘Update on GTCE position following Secretary of State announcement on 2nd June’ which informed Council members of action taken since the announcement considering the constitutional position in which the GTCE is now placed, detailing the management responses that have been made as well as organisational implications. Council noted that the Executive Committee were meeting on 14 July to consider next steps in the light of the discussion and issues raised at the Council meeting

Council received a report on the Value of the General Teaching Council for England’s (GTCE) functions and subject to a small number of amendments, agreed the detail included within the paper regarding the statutory functions of the GTCE and the importance of these functions to the education system and to public confidence

Council received and noted a paper on the 2010/11 Corporate Risk Register The paper provided an update on the process in the light of the announcement made by the Secretary of State on 2 June and issues will be presented to the Executive Committee once completed and reported through as appropriate to the Audit Committee and Council in due course.
