The General Teaching Council for England met on Wednesday 24 September 2008 at the Oxford Belfry hotel, Milton Common, Near Thame, Oxfordshire, OX9 2JW

Council approved the minutes of the previous meeting and noted the standard decision tracking paper setting out progress in actioning previous decisions. The Chair and Vice Chairs’ diaries were noted.

Council received a verbal report by the Chief Executive, Keith Bartley.

Council received a report on Establishing a Framework for GTC(E) Corporate Priorities 2008-12. Council considered and approved a framework for establishing corporate priorities to guide the activity of the Council through to September 2012 with a view to the Council approving a medium term Corporate Plan at its meeting in January 2009.  

Council considered a report on Programme Management and Policy Development 2008-12 and noted the major work streams that will flow from the corporate priorities subject to a more detailed report back to the January meeting following consideration by the Executive Committee later in the year.

Council received the Summary of work of Committees. As this was the first meeting of the year the only Committee which had met and therefore been able to report to Council was the Executive Committee. Council agreed the recommendation from the Committee that the Institute for Learning be granted observer status at full Council meetings.

Council noted a report on Performance Monitoring Q1 2008-09 which was brought to inform Council of progress achieved in quarter 1 2008-09 in implementing the 2007-10 GTC Corporate Plan.
