Research
last updated:December 2011
Research projects help the GTC provide well-informed advice to the Government on policies that affect teaching.
Since 2004 the GTC has surveyed representative samples of the profession, drawn from the Register of teachers. Research is also carried out with teachers in small groups, to explore in depth their experience of issues that affect standards of teaching and the quality of learning.
Other research projects commissioned by the GTC include 'Becoming a Teacher', a longitudinal study of new entrants to the profession. The research is conducted by the University of Leeds, the University of Nottingham and MORI, and the project runs from 2003 to 2009.
The GTC's Research for Teachers helps teachers to use research, offering summaries of recent research on educational issues that teachers can use in the classroom. The summaries are prepared by the Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education (CUREE).
The GTC helps to fund the National Teacher Research Panel, to ensure that research carried out in teaching meets teachers’ needs.
