How research can work for you

Our new publication Using research in your school and your teaching: Research engaged professional practice examines the benefits that taking part in research can bring to teachers.

The great educationalist Lawrence Stenhouse defined research as 'systematic enquiry, made public', and argued that research enquiry aims to solve problems by achieving deeper understanding. On a more everyday level, one primary teacher told the leaflet's project team that "research is about improving your professional practice. It's a way of putting the 'wow moments' back into teaching."

As well as those wow moments for you, the leaflet shows there are benefits for the school as well. It develops the concept of the 'research engaged' school, with practical examples of how schools have used research in wholeschool development.

These range from a Birmingham infant school where an action research project improved the way staff taught reading to a large Essex comprehensive that investigated the impact of their Key Stage 3 Accelerated Learning programme on student motivation.

Using research in your school and your teaching is the sixth leaflet in our Teachers' Professional Learning Framework series. We are sending two copies to every school. For your own copy, either phone 0870 001 0308 or download direct from www.gtce.org.uk/tplf
