Welcome to the spring issue of Teaching: the GTC Magazine.

There's a familiar face that's missing from this issue of your magazine. GTC Chief Executive Carol Adams retired last autumn – and this is the first magazine we’ve published that doesn’t include her contribution.

As those of you who met Carol during her seven years in post will recall, her passion and enthusiasm for teaching was inspirational. But we must prepare for the future and, as I write this, I’m looking forward to working with Council to appoint a new CE, who will be introduced in the magazine’s next edition.

Since the publication of the magazine we have learned of the death of Carol Adams. The GTC has published a tribute to Carol.

Carol’s departure is an appropriate moment to take stock of some of the GTC’s most significant work. Here we’re exploring the pioneering role of the GTC’s Teacher Learning Academy (chapter 4). We’re looking at the impact of the GTC’s three networks - Connect, Achieve and Engage (chapter 9). And we’re reviewing how far our work on assessment has developed (chapter 8). For those in primary schools, don’t forget the current independent review into primary education includes assessment – see the news story on page 4 for details of how to add your view.

We’re also investigating the growing contribution of European Economic Area (EEA) teachers to our classrooms (page 10). Of course, while we welcome the input of all our overseas colleagues, recruitment here must never be to the detriment of their own country’s education service.
