Teachers’ work with asylum-seeking and refugee children
Read a report on the GTC’s expert round table session on asylum-seeking and refugee (ASR) children, organised through the Achieve network. The session looked at the main barriers to education for ASR children and young people and also explored how teachers are involved in immigration control.
Concerns have been reported about the roles that teachers have been asked to play in relation to the activities of the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND). These included involvement (as an appropriate adult) in removals, where the child is taken from school, and requests to provide information about individuals and families that the IND is seeking to remove.
As a result of these concerns, the GTC convened an expert round table as a means of investigating further. The session explored:
- the main barriers to education for ASR children and young people
- how teachers and others in the education service are involved in immigration control
- the actions, if any, that the GTC should take as the professional regulatory body for teaching.
