Introducing the GTC Networks.

Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.

The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.

GARP: anti-racism and primary teaching

A group of primary teachers in Nottingham has produced a resource pack to help teachers integrate anti-racism into primary teaching.

Members of this group were frustrated by the lack of global and anti-racist perspectives (GARP) within the Foundation stage and Key Stages 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum.

The resulting manual is designed to challenge eurocentric views. It gives practical ways to integrate anti-racism into the daily teaching and learning activities of the National Curriculum, and the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies.

The manual embodies three principles:

The manual provides a map of the primary curriculum, matched to QCA units, and identifies global and anti-racist perspectives within each unit.

The subjects cross the entire curriculum and there is also guidance on assemblies.

Resources include case studies based on projects that have excited and motivated children in Nottingham schools. There is advice on how to avoid reinforcing negative stereotypes, and information on making global links and working with artists. The manual also gives details of relevant websites and educational suppliers.

To find out more about ‘Integrating Global and Anti-Racist Perspectives (GARP) within the Primary Curriculum’ visit the Ethic Minority Achievement website or contact the group at: info@garp.org.uk.
