Introducing the GTC Networks.

Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.

The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.

London Schools and the Black Child Conference

'Recognising Achievements, Creating Futures'

On 8 December 2007 over 1,000 delegates attended the fifth annual ‘London schools and the Black Child’ conference. Teachers, parents, local government representatives, central government officials, and community workers met to debate the issue of black pupils’ underachievement in the capital.

The conference was chaired by Diane Abbott MP and Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London.

This annual event is seen as a means of pressuring the Government for action to:

The conference reported on the successes of the National Strategy programme 'Aiming High: Raising the Achievement of Minority Ethnic Pupils', while recognising that there was still more progress to be made.

Achieve Network

The Achieve Network was launched three years ago at the London Schools and the Black Child conference. We had a strong presence at the latest event and led a workshop entitled ‘Developing Teacher expertise in Race Equality’.

Delegates were given the opportunity to explore how they might develop their classroom practice within the context of race equality by engaging with the ‘Race Equality and Your School’ project and using the Teacher Learning Academy to structure their learning.

Teachers were inspired by taking part in the Achieve network and looked forward to taking part in events to support their research-informed practice. As a result, dozens of them signed up to the project.

If you interested in attending one of the ‘Race Equality and Your School’ events in spring 2008, visit our conference website.
