Introducing the GTC Networks.

Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.

The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.

Improving Teaching – Enhancing Learning - Connecting evidence, practice and policy

National Teacher Research Panel

This free conference is part of a two day event. On Monday 24 November the focus will be on teaching and learning in Schools, 14-19 and Further Education.

Delegates will be able to participate in interactive workshops led by practitioner researchers, exhibitions, discussions in the research café and a zone where you can experiment with a wide array of research based tools, protocols and activities designed to enhance your own, your colleagues and your students’ learning.

Although this is a two day event, most delegates will attend on the single day which is most appropriate to their work.

Admission to the conference is free but will be by invitation only. The NTRP is now inviting potential delegates to register their interest before the end of the summer term. If you would like to attend, please visit the TLRP 2008 conference website.

SHARED Futures

This is a new DVD and resource pack that promotes the integration of refugee children and young people in school and the wider community

Schools, youth groups and community settings play an important role in welcoming and supporting refugee children, young people and their families. The SHARED Futures DVD showcases effective practice from across the UK. The resource pack provides guidance and training workshop activities linked to the DVD.

SHARED Futures aims to build on what schools, community and youth work settings are already doing to promote the integration of new arrivals and celebrate the diversity of local communities. It will be particularly useful for practitioners developing initiatives that:

  • promote race equality
  • build community cohesion
  • create a more diverse and culturally inclusive curriculum
  • increase the involvement of refugee parents and carers.

More information on SHARED Futures, can be found on the website

You can also watch the introductory SHARED Futures film and download an order form.

A series of regional launch events are also taking place:

  • Portsmouth - 3 July 2008
  • North-west (in Bolton) - 19 September 2008
  • Yorkshire (in Doncaster) - 29 September 2008
  • North-east (in Newcastle) - 7 October 2008

Children take charge to Change the World

The 'We Are What We Do' movement is asking every child and young person across the country: 'What simple action would you ask one million people to do to change the world?'

Their campaign is designed to show the idea of 'small actions x lots of people = big change' and they are seeking to get one million people to take part in 2008.

The best ideas will be showcased in the next 'Change the World' publication which will be made available free to 24 000 schools in the  UK. To register and find out more information, visit the Small Action Big Change website.

The European Schools

Are you looking to teach in a multinational, multilingual, multicultural school in a European setting?  Do you have UK qualified teacher status (QTS), ideally several years’ teaching experience and a basic knowledge of another EU language?

If so, the European Schools might be for you. Schools are located in Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK and exist primarily to provide a free mother-tongue education for the children of employees of EU institutions. Our aim is to build a teaching workforce, within the European Schools, that is more ethnically diverse and representative of British society today.

For further information visit Schola Europaea or contact Jennifer Waterhouse at DfES on 020 7340 4385 or jennifer.waterhouse@dfes.gsi.gov.uk.
