September 2005
This month’s idea is from Avelyn Dell, Withernsea High School.
Avelyn says: "we usually have several Graduate Trainees as well as PGCE students from several HE institutions and about 5-10 NQTs each year. We also have three relatively new cover supervisors and a number of new colleagues each year.
"For all these groups, we run a Friday Club at lunchtime. At these meetings, we provide a buffet lunch and run a structured induction programme of 40 minute tutorials on the statutory aspects of induction, as well as other areas of interest or information. The meetings are open to all new teaching and support staff.
"We always make time for members of the Friday Club to raise queries or discuss what has gone well, or badly, that week.
"Everyone who is eligible to attend does so.
"For those in formal training, there are also timetabled induction meetings for individual specific issues, but most new members of staff seem to enjoy the exchange of views and, of course, the free lunch at the Friday Club."
