March 2006
This idea comes from Michele Costello.
'Teacher's Toolbox' is the name used at The Highfield School, Letchworth for the regular after-school professional development sessions led by teachers for teachers. Attendance is voluntary and each session is short and sharp, never lasting longer than 30 minutes. Teachers from other schools are also invited.
Session leaders are usually senior or more experienced staff but newly qualified teachers sometimes lead too. Michele sees this as 'distributed leadership' in action.
Finding a focus
All teachers are encouraged to evaluate their own lessons. Their conclusions, along with information from department reviews and school based CPD priorities are used to decide the focus of each session.
Teacher's Toolbox sessions have included:
Further support
Each participant receives a pack containing:
Finally, participants are encouraged to share what they have learned with other members of their department or school.
One teacher's feedback
'I am now confident that I am already differentiating .... I now need to start experimenting with the use of learning partners, different and more flexible grouping. Thank you for the huge range of materials to pick and mix from'
Sharing what works for you
Many thanks to those of you who have taken the time to give us feedback or offer ideas for future mailings. We now have quite a few ideas that we could use - but please keep sending them. It could be yours that really inspires others!
