Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.
The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.
Down your way: small schools
Support for small schools in East Sussex.
East Sussex Children’s Services Authority (CSA) demonstrates a strong sense of commitment to its small schools. This begins at the highest level with the Director of Children’s Services taking an active interest in promoting the professional development of all staff in small schools.
One of the most frequent comments from small schools is that training and other CPD events often do not take account of their particular needs and that the models advocated are often based on the organisational structures of much larger schools.
East Sussex recognised this problem some years ago and so they appointed a small schools adviser with an identifiable budget.
They have used this budget, with some additional funds from a beacon school, to offer a range of opportunities for teacher learning including:
- annual conferences for leaders of small schools
- ‘Working Partnerships’, a network with Surrey and Kent CSAs
- access to national research from the Hay Group
- links with ‘The Pendle Network’, from Lancashire
- induction support for new headteachers of small schools
- networks of small schools set up to investigate:
- subject leadership through the PSHE curriculum
- children’s learning and achievement in each other’s schools
- a regular magazine for small schools.
