Introducing the GTC Networks.
Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.
The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.
The schools challenge
Analysis of segments of the teaching population from the GTC Survey of Teachers 2005 showed significant differences between teachers who are working in more challenging circumstances in schools and those who are not.
Teachers in more challenging circumstances are more likely to indicate that:
- their CPD needs have not been met in the last 12 months; and
- they have funded their own CPD in whole or in part.
They are more likely to indicate a need for CPD in:
- working with and/or managing support staff
- school leadership training
- school self-evaluation; and
- behaviour management.
They are less likely to agree with the following statements:
- I perceive CPD to be highly valued in my school.
- I think of my school as a professional learning community.
- In my school, I am offered CPD following evaluation of my professional development needs.
- In my school, I am usually offered CPD when I ask for it.
- In my school, senior staff identify courses relevant to the needs of the school and decide which staff should attend them.
- In my school, the budget for supply cover is adequate for teachers’ CPD needs.
- I am released from my teaching timetable for CPD.
They are more likely to indicate that the following are important for making CPD integral to the teaching profession:
- access to networks beyond schools
- links with specialist subject associations
- access to online material
- national guidelines from the government; and
- national guidelines from GTC.
