Personalising CPD: leading CPD into the future

Connect held a successful national conference to celebrate the second year of the Personalising CPD project, and to stimulate debate on the future of CPD.

The day had four main sections, informed by four questions:

• Why initiate a project on ‘Personalising CPD’?
• What is the future of CPD?
• Who designs the professional learning in your school?
• What did we learn from the project?

The key-note speakers were:

• Liz Francis, Director of Teachers’ Programmes at the Teaching and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). She spoke of the TDA’s future plans for CPD and the CPD leadership project. Detailed information was also provided on the new Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL).
• Dylan Wiliam, Acting Director of the Institute of Education, University of London. Dylan said teacher quality was the key to improving pupil achievement, and CPD was therefore crucial to school improvement. He challenged delegates to a focus on action; CPD will mean nothing if it leads only to changes in thinking.
• Philippa Cordingley of the Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education (CUREE). Philippa  gave the conference a perfect vision of a future CPD leader. She asked delegates to reflect on how far the research on CPD leadership and this practice were aligned, and then to consider their own practice.
• Lesley Saunders, Senior Research Adviser with the GTC. Lesley provided a thought-provoking insight into emotional and ethical intelligence issues in pedagogy and asked us to consider if ‘the personal is the pedagogical.’

The learning conversations at the conference centred on questions considered by the group of school-based and LA CPD advisers, known as the Connect Think Tank, over the year. They focused especially on enquiry-led professional learning and the link between CPD and performance management. The content of all the learning conversations are provided as a downloadable resource.
