The GTC has always put CPD at the centre of its policy and advisory work. Changes to performance management procedures have now been published following a consultation over the summer by the DfES.
The new guidance places more emphasis on CPD and its importance in improving the quality of teaching and educational outcomes.
It also offers the view that these performance management procedures will give the necessary information to make decisions about pay and progression, but also make it possible for individual teachers to have more say in determining their own CPD.
The GTC responded to the consultation by making the following points:
The GTC believes that without incorporating these features into performance management, the procedures will not help to maintain or raise the quality of teaching and learning for all children and young people.
Schools will be expected to have the new procedures in place by 1 September 2007 and further details can be found on
www.teachernet.gov.uk/management/payandperformance/performancemanagement/keydocuments/.
The revised professional standards framework is expected to be available in January 2007.
