Introducing the GTC Networks.

Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.

The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.

Surviving and thriving in the NQT year

Lee Ferris teaches modern foreign languages at St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School, Newcastle. He is in his second year of teaching and is now assistant head of Year 7.

Lee’s PowerPoint presentation tracks his journey through his induction year. He describes his route into teaching and uses a series of pictures (slides 4 to 9) to demonstrate how he felt at the start of the academic year and during induction.

Here are some questions you might like to consider:

Lee’s key learning points and support strategies

Lee identified increased expertise in behaviour management as a key learning point.  See slide 10 for suggestions and reassurance. Lee recommends working closely with your induction tutor and taking time for yourself.

Consider these questions and remember, you should not feel alone.

As the year progressed Lee felt that he could start to reflect on it. He identified a number of high points. Can you?

The presentation is a very honest account of Lee’s year. Take time to have a look and compare your experiences with his.

Perhaps you would be interested in telling your story at future conferences and meetings to support NQTs. If so, or if you have any key learning points and key support strategies to share, then e-mail us at engage@gtce.org.uk. Share your learning across the network.
