Introducing the GTC Networks.
Good teaching needs good networks and good networks need good teachers.
The GTC Networks provide support by linking teachers nationally and putting them in touch with the latest research and evidence. They let teachers have a voice at national debates on changes to education.
New induction requirements
The Government has just completed a consultation on the current induction regulations and guidance. This is likely to lead to changes for September 2008.
The current guidance includes some very important details about how to ensure that you complete your induction as effectively and efficiently as possible, including:
- the minimum employment period
- total time to be completed (one year full time)
- your entitlement to release time and support
- suitable settings for completing induction
- your responsibilities as a newly qualified teacher as well as those of your mentor, the head teacher and the appropriate body that informs the GTC of your induction result.
Proposed changes
The proposals will help to simplify the regulations. They also suggest:
- ways to clarify ‘allowable’ absences
- provide more discretion for appropriate bodies to determine the time necessary for induction to be completed
- ways to aggregate time in service, or service in different schools or local authorities (LAs).
The guidance for these regulations was included in the consultation. If agreed, the new guidance will provide clearer information about:
- the roles and responsibilities of all parties
- who needs to do induction, where it can occur and what teaching counts towards induction
- the length of the induction period
- the induction programme
what to do in cases of unsatisfactory progress
- the appeals procedure.
