University and college lecturers' dispute – update 19 July 2006

19/07/2006

It has been announced on Tuesday July 18th that the University and Lecturers' Union (UCU) has voted to accept a pay deal offered by employers, ending the lecturers' national boycott of exam marking (19 Jul 2006).

This dispute had raised concerns for some trainee teachers about possible delays to receiving confirmation of their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and ability to take up teaching posts in September. The GTC's role in the process is to receive recommendations for the award of QTS from Initial Teacher Training (ITT) providers. We then record these results on the GTC Register of Teachers' database, and issue QTS certificates.

Because of the boycott, there may still be a few delays to some ITT providers supplying us with QTS recommendations, but we now anticipate that most will be able to do this quickly enough for us to issue QTS on time. However, we have put plans in place to speed up the process of recording QTS and issuing certificates and we aim to be able to load the results- once received - onto the GTC database within seven working days.

It is still possible that a student affected by delay, who needs to re-take or re-sit part of their course, will not have time to do so before their results are sent to us. In that case, the GTC will be able to backdate the award of QTS to 1 August 2006 as long as we have received a recommendation from their ITT provider before the end of October.

Trainees with any queries relating to the award of QTS should contact their ITT provider to establish if their results have been sent to the GTC. Employers wishing to seek confirmation of the award of QTS to potential employees should undertake checking through the GTC online service:
