It is vitally important that schools have clear guidance and effective support to ensure that all the necessary checks on the school workforce are conducted effectively and accurate records kept (05 Jul 2006).
For qualified teachers, confirming that a teacher is registered with the GTC is an essential part of the pre-employment checking process. This will confirm the teacher's qualifications and induction status. It will reveal whether a teacher has been barred by the Secretary of State. It will also reveal whether a teacher is subject to a disciplinary order. Such orders may relate to a criminal conviction or past professional misconduct or incompetence, and may prohibit people from teaching or restrict their teaching practice.
The GTC has a liaison programme in place with local authorities and supply agencies to ensure that they are aware of their duties to refer cases of alleged misconduct to the DfES and cases of alleged incompetence to the GTC and to encourage them to make use of our on line checking facility.
