LGBT History Month
08/01/2007
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans (LGBT) History Month, which runs throughout February, is an annual event which gives people to the chance to learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Britain and Northern Ireland (08 Jan 2007).
It was set up by School's Out!, a campaigning organisation of LGBT people involved in education. They took their inspiration partly from the United States, where this event has been celebrated since 1994, and also from Black History Month. To find out more about the month and associated events and activities, visit the website.
The GTC is currently supporting the No Outsiders research study, a 28 month collaborative project being co-ordinated by researchers from the University of Sunderland in conjunction with the University of Exeter and the Institute of Education at the University of London. The project supports teachers in the North East, South West, London and the Midlands to develop strategies to address lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality in their own schools and classrooms.
In particular, the research addresses sexualities equality issues relating to the experiences of pupils, teachers and parents, and the projects undertaken by participating teachers may focus on any or all of these issues.
The project outcomes will include a range of approaches and resources to be submitted to the Teacher Training Resource Bank (TTRB), the national online databases of resources for teaching and teacher training, as aids to teachers working with these issues.
This research also supports the work of Education For All, Stonewall’s three year campaign to challenge homophobia in schools.
