Ofsted has today (October 17, 2007) released its annual report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Education, Children's Services and Skills for 2006/07. The report finds a broadly positive picture across education, child care and adult skills, but warns that not enough is being done to narrow the gap and improve the care and education of disadvantaged children and young people. Commenting on the Ofsted report, GTC Chief Executive Keith Bartley said: "We know that remaining in school and achieving even just one GCSE greatly improves the life chances of a young person. The continuing achievement gap need to be urgently addressed to ensure that all young people have equal life opportunities, regardless of economic background.
'Schools have an empowering effect, as shown by the report's case studies of high achievement in deprived areas. We know from research that one of the key drivers in improving the standard of teaching and outcomes for pupils is effective professional development for teachers. We will now be working with the Primary Review and Good Childhood Enquiry to address these issues and to gather views from teachers about what can be done to narrow the gap.'
