In a speech at the London Chartered Teachers Conference today, GTC Chief Executive Carol Adams outlined the ways in which Chartered London Teachers can gain professional recognition and development through the GTC Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) (20 Feb 2006).
Ms Adams spoke about the impact of new professionalism and described how teachers are able to demonstrate their commitment to continuing professional development through their participation in the TLA. She said that teachers who had taken part in the TLA so far valued both the recognition they gained from the Academy and the benefits of the process itself for their development. Schools leaders felt the TLA supported school improvement.
Referring to research conducted for the GTC and NUT, she outlined characteristics of effective continuing professional development, including a focus identified by the teacher, peer support, observation and feedback and external expertise. The TLA, a pilot scheme to develop a national system of recognition for teachers’ development, draws on these characteristics to support and recognise teachers’ own learning in a topic of their choice.
