Following a recent review the GTC is changing its process for recording disciplinary sanctions.
Procedures relating to teachers re-applying to the GTC teaching register following a prohibition order are also being amended.
All disciplinary orders are currently a matter of public record. They are announced in public and are recorded on the GTC Teaching Register. The change means that from June 2008 employers checking teachers’ GTC registration status will now have access to information about sanctions after they have expired as well as current ones.
In all cases expired sanctions will be clearly marked as having expired.
This change in procedure aims to ensure the Council’s procedures are consistent with regulation best practice, are transparent, support better recruitment and that they protect and maintain public confidence and standards in the teaching profession.
Changes have also been introduced to amend procedures for teachers who apply to be restored to the GTC Teaching Register following a prohibition order. Some teachers who receive a prohibition order are given the opportunity to re-apply to be put back on the Teaching Register after a fixed period of time. If they choose to make such an application, their case is heard at a new hearing known as a restoration hearing.
In future, prior to a restoration hearing taking place, the teacher must submit references from three independent referees, who must know about the sanction.
