GTC publishes names of candidates for 2008 Council elections
Fri, 18 Jan 2008 00:00:00

The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) has today published the list of candidates standing in its 2008 Council elections. Voting takes place between February 22 and March 23.

There are 25 places for directly elected teachers on Council. These are:

There are 14 teachers competing for the 11 primary seats; 26 candidates for the 11 secondary seats and five primary heads seeking election in the primary head teacher category.

In two categories – for a secondary head and a special school teacher - there is a single candidate, who is therefore elected unopposed.  The elected Special School candidate is Stephen Viner, from a Community Special School in Hertfordshire, and the secondary head is David Lowe, from a Community High School in Lancashire.

Commenting, GTC Chair Judy Moorhouse says:

'We have achieved a good range of candidates, so we have met our first objective. I would like to have seen more people standing, but it is a big commitment and teachers have many competing calls on their time.

'I do now urge teachers to vote – you can do so online or by post – it is for you to decide who will be working on behalf of teaching on the GTC Council for the next four years. We need a wide range of expertise and diversity on Council – from the very experienced to the relative newcomers, both full and part-time teachers, from all sections of the profession.'

The final candidate list is as follows:

Primary teachers

Primary heads

Special school

Secondary teachers
