Response to Government response to select committee testing and assessment report
Wed, 23 Jul 2008 01:00:00

Commenting on the Government’s response to the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee report into testing and assessment, GTC Chief Executive Keith Bartley said:

‘Our research with parents presented to the select committee suggested that the kind of assessment information they value most is rounded information about their children’s progress and the chance to have an ongoing dialogue with schools and teachers. There is great value in gathering evidence on the experience and views of those most directly affected by our education system - parents and pupils – and we are currently involved in research with young people about their involvement as active participants in their own learning.

‘We stand by the evidence that we put to the select committee earlier this year that the current assessment arrangements are not serving pupil learning as well as they need to. Attempting to use assessment tests for too many different purposes is undermining their ability to deliver properly on any. The GTC will continue to marshal the evidence about how the assessment regime can be improved in the interests of pupil achievement.

‘The Government’s response to the select committee report does not offer any real prospect of alleviating the high stakes nature of the current system; it is therefore difficult to see how the proposed guidance to schools on avoiding over preparation and ‘teaching to the test’ can be really helpful.’
