The General Teaching Council for England (GTC), the professional body for teaching, is seeking to recruit a pool of people to sit on its disciplinary committees (07 Dec 2006).
The GTC registers qualified teachers, provides advice to government on teaching and learning and regulates the teaching profession. The basis of the GTC’s regulatory role is to uphold high standards of conduct and practice in the profession in the public interest. Its disciplinary committees investigate and hear allegations of unacceptable professional conduct, serious professional incompetence and criminal conviction.
Disciplinary hearings are currently heard by committees made up of members of the GTC’s 64-strong Council. The GTC now wishes to appoint a pool of 15 teachers and 10 lay members to supplement the work of Council members and increase those available to carry out this work.
Members of the pool will be expected to commit to up to 12 days per year. Appointments will be expected to last for 4 years. Applicants must be able to demonstrate:
The closing date for applications is 5.00 pm on 15 December 2006. Interviews will be held in late January to mid February 2007.
An information and application pack can be downloaded from the vacancies section or a hard copy requested by calling 0121 345 0232 (24 hours).
Notes for Editors
Applicants must be able to undertake a compulsory residential training programme on 12 and 13 March 2007.
Teacher members must be registered with the Council and employed or engaged to work as teachers on the date they sit on a regulatory committee.
Lay members must not be registered teachers and must not have been employed as a teacher after 1 April 2002.
Remuneration/reimbursement is on the basis of £225 per day, payable either as a reimbursement to employers or as a personal daily rate. Reasonable travel and accommodation expenses based on the Council’s agreed scheme are also payable. The level of remuneration is inclusive of time spent on case preparation.
Appointments will be under a contract to provide services to the GTC and panellists will not be employees of the GTC.
These appointments will be made on merit and we welcome applications from ethnic minority groups and teachers with disabilities who are currently under-represented on regulatory committees.
