Ofsted published a report on 11 July, 2006, which looks at professional development in schools. The report finds that continuous professional development (CPD) for staff is most effective in schools where senior managers fully understand its potential for raising standards and are committed to using it as a key driver for school improvement. (12 Jul 2006).
Welcoming the report, Sarah Stephens, GTC Director of Policy, says:
"This report provides further evidence that effective professional development for teachers plays a crucial part in improving pupil outcomes. It is vital that teachers' development needs are seen as an integral part of school improvement plans, to help improve standards of teaching and learning throughout the whole school community. The GTC offers two sources of support for CPD, our Connect network for CPD leaders and our Teacher Learning Academy (TLA).
The report identifies several areas for improvement, and the TLA offers individual teachers a way of addressing their CPD goals through its emphasis on individual needs, working with colleagues and evaluation".
