Introducing parents to the General Teaching Council for England

The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) has produced a leaflet for parents to explain the organisation’s role and responsibilities as it works for the benefit of children, through teachers.

The GTC is the independent professional body for teaching in England and regulates the profession. It also keeps a register of qualified teachers who can teach in maintained schools in England and advises Government on issues that affect the quality of teaching and learning.

The leaflet contains useful information for parents who already have children in school or who are preparing to enrol a child into school in the near future.

The leaflet includes:

• A general summary of the organisation’s key responsibilities
• The GTC’s role in regulating the teaching profession
• The GTC code of conduct for teachers - and how parents can contribute to an upcoming review of this
• Services offered by the GTC for teachers including the Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) and Professional Networks

Copies of the leaflet have been sent to all schools, libraries and health centres in England. Copies are also available by calling tel: (0870) 001 0308 or can be downloaded at www.gtce.org.uk/publications

The GTC has also launched a section of its website - www.gtce.org.uk/parents - to keep parents up to date with GTC activities they may find of particular interest, for example, its work on testing in schools.
