Carol Adams announces her retirement after seven years as the first GTC Chief Executive (04 Sep 2006).
Ms Adams was appointed as the first Chief Executive of the GTC in October 1999. She has led the development of the organisation from its launch in September 2000 through to its sixth anniversary. The GTC now has a live register of 520,000 qualified teachers and provides an online checking service for employers. It has conducted more than 280 regulatory hearings; is working directly with teachers through the GTC Teacher Learning Academy in 75 local authorities; has three active professional networks and a well established policy and research portfolio.
Carol Adams joined the GTC after ten years as a Chief Education Officer for Shropshire and Wolverhampton and is a former history teacher and Inner London Education Authority inspector. Carol is 58 and has been working in education for 36 years. Carol has recently been appointed as a commissioner for the Commission for Racial Equality and will continue with this and other public roles.
Talking about her seven years with the GTC, Carol Adams said today:
“Working at the GTC has been a tremendous privilege and hugely enjoyable. I have met many inspiring teachers and I have worked with a fantastic group of staff and Council Members. It will be a wrench to leave the GTC, but after seven years, the time is right. I am looking forward to taking up new opportunities and having more time to give to equalities work. I know that the GTC will prosper because it is focused on what really matters, improving children’s education by supporting the professionalism of teachers.”
Judy Moorhouse, Chair of the GTC, paid tribute to Carol’s work:
“Carol has had the vision and drive to create a unique organisation from scratch. She took a completely new group of Council Members and inspired us to be ambitious for the Council. Over the last seven years, Carol has always kept us focused on the vital role that teaching plays in our society and the importance of promoting teacher professionalism. I find it difficult to imagine the GTC without Carol. I value her contribution enormously and wish her well for the future.”
Ms Adams will be leaving the GTC at the end of October. Her successor will be recruited through public advertisement and the appointment made by Council members. The recruitment process will begin in the next few weeks.
