Advanced skills teacher Sashi Sivaloganathan, who works in an Enfield special school, has been re-elected as Vice Chair of the General Teaching Council to serve a further two years from 1 September 2007 to 31 August 2009.
56 of the Council’s 63 current Members voted in the election, with Sashi securing 35 votes over 21 for Gail Mortimer, an elected secondary teacher Member who chairs the GTC’s Audit Monitoring and Review Committee.
Commenting on her re-election, Ms Sivaloganathan says :
'I am thrilled to have received the support of my colleagues to serve as Vice Chair for a further two years. I have really enjoyed supporting Judy Moorhouse in her role. The GTC’s conferences and events have given me the privilege of meeting a huge range of teachers doing exciting and innovative work to improve pupil learning.
'That expertise and commitment is feeding through into the GTC’s policy advice to Government and the GTC’s work to support teachers is really taking off. Through the GTC Teacher Learning Academy, our professional networks and our research programme, we are providing practical ways for teachers to network and learn from each other.
'At the same time, the GTC register and our regulatory work provide a necessary safeguard of the public interest. I thank my colleagues for placing their faith in me and look forward to working with Judy, the Council and its staff to develop and extend the work of the GTC on vital issues like the reform of our assessment system, over the next two years.'
Chief Executive Keith Bartley says :
'I congratulate Sashi on her re-election and look forward to working with her over the next two years. I have seen Sashi in action at GTC events and she is an excellent champion for teaching and teachers.'
