GTC responds to launch of specialised diplomas
Wed, 12 Jul 2006 01:00:00

The DfES has announced the launch of new, specialised diplomas for 14 to 19 year olds, which will include subjects such as robotics, aerospace engineering, electrical installation and graphic design. Diplomas will be available in five subjects from 2008 and, by 2013, a total of 14 subjects will be available. The Education Bill provides an entitlement for all young people aged 14 to 19 to study any of them.

In response, GTC Chief Executive Carol Adams says:

"We welcome the new, specialised diplomas but it is absolutely vital that teachers receive the training and development they will need in order to successfully deliver them. The diplomas will radically transform the current examination system, and this reform must be accompanied by a significant investment in teachers' professional development.

The new diplomas will also require schools and colleges to develop strong partnerships and work together in new ways, and so Government must ensure that they are given incentives to collaborate. The diplomas offer a real alternative route for students seeking sector-related qualifications, but only if they are given the same status as academic results".
