Government confirms STRB pay award for teachers
Thu, 16 Feb 2006 00:00:00

Education and Skills Secretary Ruth Kelly confirmed on February 16, 2006, that she will implement the recommendations of the School Teachers' Review Body (STRB) for a 2.5 per cent pay rise for teachers in September 2006 and 2007, and has accepted proposals for further work on a number of pay-related matters (16 Feb 2006).

Sarah Stephens, GTC Director of Policy, says: "We know from our annual survey of the profession that 1 in 5 teachers did not have their development needs met at all last year. Now that there is to be a closer link between professional development and pay progression, it is vital that all teachers have equal access to high quality development each year.

"We welcome the announcement of a renewed description of teachers' responsibilities to support a modern teaching profession, and the GTC will play its part in this effort. We also strongly endorse the recognition of the special skills and extended qualifications of SEN teachers, and welcome the effort to address the inequalities which currently exist for unattached teachers.  We are aware from our project with teachers in non-standard settings, many of whom are unattached, that access to CPD is not guaranteed."
