Annual digest of statistics 2009-10

The 2009-10 digest shows that there are more registered teachers in England than ever before, with an increase of nearly 3% compared to last year. The workforce is getting younger, and there are more newly-qualified teachers in supply teaching.

Teaching remains a predominantly female profession; one quarter of registered in-service teachers are men, with the proportion dipping to 12% of registered primary teachers and 3% of registered nursery school staff.

For the first time, the digest has information about provisionally-registered instructors and overseas-trained teachers.
