Induction

It is a requirement that all newly qualified teachers (NQTs) undertake a formal induction period that lasts for a minimum of three full school terms. Teachers cannot begin their Induction until they have been awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The responsibility for NQT training, support, guidance and supervision during an Induction period rest with the relevant appropriate body and an individual NQT’s head teacher. Appropriate bodies are usually the local authority employing the NQT and at the end of an Induction period it is the appropriate body who decides if an NQT has successfully met the induction standards.

The GTC’s remit regarding Induction is to ensure that all Induction results are collected from appropriate bodies and recorded in the GTC Register of Teachers. Teachers who pass induction are issued with an induction certificate.

The GTC is also the appeal body for teachers who fail their induction period. Visit the Standards and Regulation section to read about the guidance and procedures for the hearing of induction appeals.

If you have any queries concerning the regulations relating to an induction period and require guidance please contact the induction team of the Teaching and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) on 020 7023 8028. Alternatively see TDA induction guidance notes on the Teachernet website
