Who needs to be fully registered?
Full registration is a requirement for all qualified teachers who are employed to carry out ‘specified work’ in a maintained school, a non-maintained special school or a pupil referral unit.
‘Specified work’ is defined as:
- planning and preparing lessons and courses for pupils
- delivering lessons to pupils
- assessing the development, progress and attainment of pupils
- reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
The requirement to register applies to full-time, part-time and supply teachers.
If you are employed as a teacher in other settings, it may be a requirement of your contract of employment that you are registered with the GTC. You should check this with your employer.
We welcome registration from all qualified teachers, whether required to register or not.

You don't need to be registered if you are a:
- teacher working solely in home education
- teacher working in outdoor education centres
- teacher working in the independent sector or in further or higher education
- teacher working in non-maintained nursery schools
- teacher working as an advisor or consultant who does not carry out ‘specified’ work.
