Checking whether a teacher is fully registered
published:27 Aug 2009
Employers and members of the public can check whether a teacher is registered.
Employers
Employers always need to check whether a qualified teacher, overseas trained teacher or instructor who is required to be registered is actually registered with the GTC. It is one of the key public safeguards, alongside criminal record checks and the scheme for barring unsuitable teachers run by the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
The GTC has a free, secure online service to allow Local Authorities, schools and supply agencies to check the GTC Register themselves.
The online service enables employers to view the following information:
- details of a teacher's Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- induction information
- disciplinary orders, if any exist
- details of a teacher’s degree qualifications, where available.
If you are an employer and would like more information on how to access this free service contact the Employer Access team.
- email: employeraccess@gtce.org.uk
- phone: 0121 345 0150
Members of the public
Contact the registration helpdesk with the teacher's full name and the school where they are employed.
We will only confirm whether they are registered on a yes/no basis.
