The GTC Register of teachers contains details of over 500,000 teachers registered with the Council, plus over two million records of people with DfES numbers. Employers are able to access the Register in order to obtain information relevant to them.
By law qualified teachers may only carry out ‘specified work’ in maintained schools, non-maintained special schools and pupil referral units if they are registered with the General Teaching Council as per the Education (Specified Work and Registration) (England) Regulations 2003.
The GTC has a free online service that allows employers to check the GTC Register themselves. It enables local authority employers and large supply teacher agencies to check the qualification, induction and registration status of all teachers either currently working for them, or individuals applying for a teaching post.

This convenient and easy to use service provides instant access to the GTC Register. Employers will no longer have to post or email enquiries; or wait for clearance to be given (though this option is still available).

If you are a local authority employer or a large teacher supply agency we welcome and encourage your regular use of this service. Only named contacts which have been agreed with the GTC will be issued with a username and password.
Local authorities and teacher supply agencies requiring information about the online facility should contact the Employer Access team.
This service is being rolled out to schools throughout 2008 in alphabetical order of local authorities.
Schools in each batch of the exercise will receive a letter containing two numerical codes necessary for access and a guidance booklet. Upon registration of the school the facility is immediately available for use.

A school can also bulk check the registration status of their staff by sending an email to the Employer Access Team detailing the school address, LA code and DfES establishment number and requesting a registration list of teachers employed in their school.
