60,000 provide ethnicity and disability details
last updated:05 May 2010
GTC Chief Executive Keith Bartley has thanked the 60,000 teachers who recently responded to a request from the GTC to provide information on their ethnic origin for the GTC Register of Teachers, as well as declaring any disability in confidence.
Most newly qualified teachers provide this information when they first register but the GTC has been keen to gather data from teachers who qualified before the GTC was created.
By improving the range and accuracy of the data held, the GTC is able to provide anonymised information to policy makers on the demographics of the teaching workforce. The Register now has ethnicity information for nearly 60 per cent of the profession and disability data for around a quarter of registrants.
Keith said: 'I am very grateful to the 60,000 colleagues who took the trouble to respond to our request for information. Good quality information is an essential tool when working to promote equality. This information will support the work of two important forums hosted by the GTC, the Equality Forum and the Disabled Teachers Taskforce.'
