Trainee teachers on professional footing

published:23 Apr 2009

Last term we welcomed the first trainee teachers into provisional registration with the GTC, a stepping stone into full registration.

It puts more than 30,000 trainees quickly onto a professional footing, and acknowledges that their commitment to the profession begins on their first day of training.

Provisional registration means that trainee teachers, all of whom have frequent contact with children, are both suitable to teach and, through the conduct provisions of the GTC code, are properly regulated. This is important for pupils’ welfare and parents’ peace of mind. Currently there is no fee for provisional registration, but trainee teachers can use GTC services such as Research for Teachers – useful for essays! – and our professional networks.

Instructors and overseas-trained teachers will become provisionally registered in September 2009.

We have an active programme of talks to trainee teachers. If you are involved in teacher training, contact the GTC to find out more.
